The Core Values of Pilates

Breath

Every Pilates exercise has a specific breathing pattern that help you to engage your deep abdominals, to concentrate, to release tension and enhance circulation. Breathing gives rhythm to your exercises. Deep inhalation and full exhalation also exercises lung capacity, bringing deep relaxation as a pleasant side effect.

Concentration

Pilates is workout for the clever. In a Pilates workout there is a small number of repetitions to allow you to perform the movements with precision and control without losing concentration. You need to focus  to make sure that you get everything right to benefit most from your training.

Centring

All Pilates exercises should be done with the core muscles engaged to ensure stability and safe movement. Even when doing and upper or lower body exercise, you should keep your abdominals pulled in and up to allow your movements to become free and controlled.

Flow

The more experienced you become at Pilates, the more advanced your exercises get, the more flowing your classes will be. You will be able to develop the quality of movements and your body awareness to achieve a high level of control and coordination, once movements are properly ingrained in your body. Flowing movements bring flexibility to the joints and muscles while training the body to elongate and move with an even rhythm.

Harmony

"As small bricks are used to build large buildings, so will the development of small muscles help to develop large ones. Pilates is the attainment and maintainence of a uniformly developed body with a sound mind, fully capable of naturally performing our many daily tasks with spontaneous zest and pleasure." - Joseph Pilates

Pilates is good for you

Contrary to popular belief, Pilates is for all ages. Pilates can benefit the young by helping them to improve their stamina and preserve their flexibility. It can also improve the quality of life for all people later on by extending their range of motion, and helping them to regain their strength and vigour.

Pilates is not only for rehabilitation either. Pilates is one of the most widely practised exercise regimes that can complete your general fitness. It gained incredible popularity among dancers who needed to maintain their strength, stamina and flexibility without building bulky muscle and overloading their joints.

Anita, your Pilates teacher, is free for a consultation with you to see what Pilates can do for you.

The Core Values of Pilates

Awareness

Awareness in Pilates implies an complex relationship between body and mind. Awareness improves proprioception and helps with neuromuscular re-education. This practically means getting rid of bad movement habits that create postural problems or muscular imbalances, and replacing them with good ones that help you feel better, painfree in your everyday life.

Balance

Balance is the result of the choice of exercises in a client's programme. During your Pilates equipment classes, you will follow an exercise regime that was designed with your body in mind. The aim of this individually tailored Pilates programme is to give you good coordination, and to correct your muscular and postural imbalances. All too often, our everyday activities force us to neglect one half of our body, or overuse the other. Pilates aims to bring all your muscles and joints into balance.

Control

Pilates teaches you how to control your movements in your everyday life to prevent injuries and have a deeper sense of achievement in other physical activities as well. Pilates reaches far beyond the walls of the studio and the class schedule. This control will affect all your activities in your everyday life as well.

Efficiency

Efficiency in Pilates means gain without strain. Pilates teaches you how to engage the appropriate muscles without overusing the others. Unlike at work, when staring at the computer or holding tight to the steering wheel, in Pilates you will learn that you do not need to feel unnecessary tension. It is enough to use only the muscles you need to.

Precision

It also follows from the principles of Pilates that repetitions of exercises are minimal. Pilates focuses more on the quality of movements than on their quantity. Unlike in power-trainings, when you have a large number of repetitive sets, Pilates exercises are more varied, but need to be carried out with precision to achieve the desired effect.
